Wild Pine Event

Saturday 21 March 2pm-3.30pm

A walk and a film screening, to discover the story of Scotland's wild pines!

Join us at Dundreggan for a special event celebrating Scotland’s remarkable Caledonian pinewoods. We’re delighted to be screening the recent short film The Pine Hunters, preceded by a guided walk through Dundreggan’s own pinewood with our Wild Pine Project Officer, Jane Sayers.

The walk will explore the landscape and history of these ancient woods before we return to the Rewilding Centre to watch The Pine Hunters. The film follows the Wild Pine Project, which seeks out and documents fragments of Caledonian pinewood that have long been forgotten. After the screening, there will be time for a Q&A with Jane.

Caledonian pinewoods are iconic habitats, home to some of Scotland’s rarest wildlife, yet today they cover only around 2% of their former range. Some of the most threatened pinewoods are not yet recognised by the Caledonian Pinewood Inventory, the Scottish Government’s official register. Launched in 2023, the Wild Pine Project works to discover and assess these ‘lost’ pinewoods, often hidden in steep gorges or scattered through old birchwood.

In The Pine Hunters, our ecologists travel to some of the most remote parts of the Highlands, seeking out the last remnants of this ancient forest. By mapping these sites and recording their condition, the project helps bring them to light so that future restoration is possible.

Accessibility: The guided walk will last just under an hour, covering some rough, uneven, and occasionally steep ground. If you have any questions, please contact us at info@visitdundreggan.co.uk or on 01320 340 380.
